Painting: The Marquise de Seignlay and two of her sons, 1691

This portrait by Pierre Mignard represents Catherine-Thérèse de Matignon-Thorigny as the Greek goddess Thetis, her eldest son as Achilles and her youngest son as Cupid. References to Ovid's "Metamophoses" and Homer's "Iliad" can be found also in the volcano and in the armour. Students may try to guess what message the Marquise was sending out about herself. We can read then the notes and find out about her, her time and the painter.
